28Watt Rebuilt the seat, not the shortlist.

28Watt's personal loans were all being written by a co-founder.

Their own ads had already proved the person the brief described was not answering, so the role was rebuilt before it went back out.

The challenge

28Watt's personal loans were all being written by a co-founder.

The goal was someone who would actually work the AI stack the business runs on, at whatever stage of their career.

  • Five months trying to hire it themselves.
  • One ad, LinkedIn only, wrong market.
  • More budget, one more applicant.

So we're like, maybe it's just cheaper to chat to Joe.

Jake Havey, Co-founder, 28Watt
The turning point

The brief asked for a finished broker, and their own ads had already proved that person was not answering.

So the role was rebuilt before it went back out.

The search
  1. Phase 1

    16 March: two roles engaged

28Watt engages FinTalent on two roles on the same day.

  2. Phase 2

    18 June: the seat reopens

The brief is rebuilt before the role goes back out.

  3. Phase 3

20 July: three presented, side by side

Three candidates on one call with both founders, before anyone interviewed.

  4. Phase 4

21 July: offer the same day

Two interviewed the next day, offer that afternoon.

The FinTalent approach
  1. 01

Read the ad, not the brief

Their own advertising had already answered the question.

The person the brief described was not applying. That is data, not bad luck.

  2. 02

    Rebuilt the role first

    Two ads were written.

The one used opened the seat across experience levels, from earlier in a finance career through to fully accredited, with a real pathway between them.

  3. 03

    Screened for the stack

The business runs on an AI stack.

That was named as a requirement and tested for, not assumed.

  4. 04

    Made them choose

Three candidates side by side on one call, before anyone interviewed.

Two interviewed the next day, offer that afternoon.

A young and hungry tech savvy person, or at least willing to learn.
We can teach them all this stuff.

Where it stands

The seat had been open since June. It was filled thirteen days after the first email.

On a day when a founder was out, the desk ran on its own: seven new applications reviewed and processed.

S

Sahil

Banker to broker

Seven years in a major bank's lending team, ranked its number one home lending specialist across Sydney and Melbourne.

He came off a separate mortgage broker search. He found 28Watt himself: bigger Sydney names were hiring, and his verdict on them was "just another brokerage".

Accreditation was the one thing that could have stopped it, so we got it answered.

R

Rohith

Credit Analyst | Asset Finance

Final year of a commerce degree, a year of lending behind a credit union counter, and no broking accreditation. The original brief would have filtered him out on the first line.

Nobody suggested it, but he reached out to Sahil himself to find out what the business was really like.
