The top 10 independent brokerage leaders in Australia in 2026

The big brokerage rankings are topped by franchise networks: Aussie, Mortgage Choice and Loan Market had more than 3,000 brokers between them in FY25. Take them out and a different list appears, made up of the people who built independent brokerages that compete on volume with a fraction of the headcount. This is that list, scored on three published criteria, so you can argue with the order.

The top independent brokerage leaders in Australia in 2026 include Theo Chambers (Shore Financial), Tom and Ben Hawley (Azura Financial), Nick Reilly (Inovayt), Damian Brander (The Australian Lending & Investment Centre) and William Xin (XIN Mortgage), scored on scale, results and tenure using The Adviser's Top 25 Brokerages 2026 and MPA's Top Brokerages 2026.

The ten

Independent here means the business owns its brand. Franchise networks and their franchisees are out, and so are aggregators, lenders and firms majority-owned by one. A few on the list use an aggregator's bring-your-own-brand program, which keeps the brand independent, and the card says so where it applies.

1. Theo Chambers

In seat:
CEO since co-founding in 2013
Scale:
31 brokers, $2.15b settled in FY25
Why here:
Highest-ranked independent in The Adviser's Top 25 2026
  • Scale 9/10
  • Results 8/10
  • Tenure 9/10

Total26/30

The benchmark for independent broking in Australia. Shore Financial came fourth in The Adviser's Top 25 Brokerages 2026, behind only Aussie, Mortgage Choice and Loan Market, after its 31 brokers settled $2.15 billion in FY25. That's roughly $69 million per broker against networks with well over a thousand each, and Shore says this was its eleventh straight year in the ranking. MPA's own 2026 ranking has it seventh.

Before Shore, Chambers built the Oxygen Home Loans offering across the McGrath Estate Agents network, so he came in knowing how referral volume actually flows. Three of his brokers made MPA's Top 100 in 2025, and Shore was a finalist for Major Independent Brokerage of the Year at the 2026 Australian Broking Awards.

2. Tom and Ben Hawley

In seat:
Since founding in 2016
Scale:
$1.5b settled in FY25, #6 in The Adviser's Top 25
Why here:
MFAA national business award in 2025 and 2026
  • Scale 8/10
  • Results 10/10
  • Tenure 7/10

Total25/30

The most decorated independent in the country right now. Azura won the MFAA's national Finance Broker Business Award in both 2025 and 2026, took Brokerage of the Year for firms over 20 staff at the 2025 Australian Mortgage Awards, and Tom Hawley was named Broker of the Year at the 2025 Australian Broking Awards. Four Azura brokers made MPA's Top 100 in 2025, Tom at eighth and Ben at 21st, which ties it with Mortgage Pros and Infinity Group for the most of any firm.

It's a family business that keeps growing sideways as well as up. In August 2026 the brothers launched Azura Private, a private banking arm built through a merger with Stella Private. Two co-founders share the leadership, so they share the spot.

3. Nick Reilly

In seat:
Since co-founding in 2007
Scale:
$813m settled in FY25, #23 in The Adviser's Top 25
Why here:
Major Independent Brokerage of the Year, 2026
  • Scale 6/10
  • Results 8/10
  • Tenure 10/10

Total24/30

Nineteen years running the same business, and the 2026 Australian Broking Awards named it Major Independent Brokerage of the Year. Reilly co-founded Inovayt in 2007, and it has turned acquirer: The Adviser's Top 25 coverage noted it strengthened its Queensland footprint by buying Brisbane's Fast Break Finance.

On raw volume it sits lower than the names above it, at 23rd in the Top 25 with $813 million in FY25. Tenure and the award are what put it third. Building a brokerage that wins the industry's main independent award after two decades is harder than having one big year.

4. Damian Brander

In seat:
Managing director since August 2021
Scale:
#3 in MPA's Top Brokerages 2026; $1.0b in FY25
Why here:
Independent Office of the Year, 2025
  • Scale 8/10
  • Results 9/10
  • Tenure 5/10

Total22/30

ALIC was founded in 2009 by brokers Mark Davis and Kevin Agent, both still on MPA's Top 100, and Brander has run it since 2021. Under him it ranked third in MPA's Top Brokerages 2026 and 11th in The Adviser's Top 25, won Independent Office of the Year at the 2025 Australian Broking Awards and Customer Service Office of the Year in 2026, and took the diversification brokerage award at the 2025 Australian Mortgage Awards.

He has also spun the firm's own capability out into businesses: offshore support provider Outsourced Experts and broking software Lolli. Worth knowing: The Adviser reported in early 2026 that ALIC is designing a franchise model. It's independent today, and if that changes, so will its place on this list.

5. William Xin

In seat:
Since founding in 2015
Scale:
$1.07b settled in 2025, $2.4b loan book, team of 36
Why here:
Sole broker to $1b a year in a decade
  • Scale 7/10
  • Results 7/10
  • Tenure 8/10

Total22/30

A former IT professional who started as a sole broker in 2015 and built his own origination, referral and CRM system from scratch. XIN Mortgage settled $1.07 billion in 2025, its first billion-dollar year, on a $2.4 billion loan book with a team of 36, according to MPA.

It ranked equal fifth in MPA's Top Brokerages 2026 and 21st in The Adviser's Top 25. In 2026 Xin also stepped up to lead a wider XIN Group, which is usually what happens when a brokerage outgrows its founder's desk.

6. Gerard Tiffen

In seat:
Since founding in 1995
Scale:
Equal ninth in MPA's Top Brokerages 2026
Why here:
31 years at the helm, still in the Top 100
  • Scale 5/10
  • Results 6/10
  • Tenure 10/10

Total21/30

Thirty-one years running his own brokerage and still writing at the top of the market. Tiffen founded Tiffen & Co in Canberra in 1995, ranked 22nd on MPA's Top 100 Brokers in 2025, and the firm came equal ninth in MPA's Top Brokerages 2026 with a small team.

Longevity is the point here. Most brokerages don't survive their founder's first decade, let alone three of them, and Canberra is a market where reputation travels fast in both directions.

7. Jun Sun

In seat:
Since founding in 2014
Scale:
#4 in MPA's Top Brokerages 2026; $1.1b in FY25
Why here:
Top-five national brokerage built from Melbourne
  • Scale 8/10
  • Results 5/10
  • Tenure 7/10

Total20/30

A former Westpac banker who built one of the five biggest independent brokerages in MPA's ranking from Melbourne. AUSUN came fourth in MPA's Top Brokerages 2026, which it says is its fourth straight year in the top five, and 17th in The Adviser's Top 25 with $1.1 billion settled in FY25.

It now has offices in Sydney, Brisbane, Adelaide and Perth as well as Melbourne, and serves mainly Asian-Australian clients. Scale is what puts it here. We found no national awards to lift the results score.

8. Bryce Deledio

In seat:
CEO; co-director by 2019. UFinancial founded 2008
Scale:
$1.1b settled in FY25, #10 in The Adviser's Top 25
Why here:
Ten offices, broking alongside planning and accounting
  • Scale 8/10
  • Results 6/10
  • Tenure 6/10

Total20/30

UFinancial was founded in 2008 and ranked tenth in The Adviser's Top 25 Brokerages 2026, with $1.1 billion settled in FY25. It runs broking alongside financial planning, accounting and commercial and asset finance, across ten offices from Torquay to Hobart, and it expanded into South Australia by buying Adelaide brokerage Rise High.

Its succession model, which brings smaller independent brokers into the group, is one of the more interesting answers to the question every solo broker eventually asks: who buys my book? We couldn't find when Deledio took the CEO title, which is what the tenure score reflects.

9. Colin Mason

In seat:
Since co-founding in 2021, with Jessie Spencer
Scale:
$1.0b settled in FY25, #14 in The Adviser's Top 25
Why here:
Top 25 within four years of launch
  • Scale 7/10
  • Results 8/10
  • Tenure 4/10

Total19/30

The fastest climb on this list. Mason co-founded Mason Finance Group on the Sunshine Coast in 2021, and four years later it was 14th in The Adviser's Top 25 with $1.0 billion settled in FY25. He still writes at the top end himself: 13th on MPA's Top 100 in 2025 and tenth in The Adviser's Elite Broker residential ranking.

He came to it as a former number one Mortgage Choice broker and Loan Market's first elite-brokerage business coach. The business runs under Loan Market Group's bring-your-own-brand aggregation, so the brand is its own rather than a franchise office.

10. Laith Hana

In seat:
Since founding in 2018, with co-director Yousif Jirjis
Scale:
Boutique team; firm volume not published
Why here:
#2 on MPA's Top 100 Brokers 2025
  • Scale 4/10
  • Results 8/10
  • Tenure 5/10

Total17/30

Australia's second-ranked broker by volume on MPA's Top 100 in 2025, while running a boutique he founded in 2018. Hana was also Connective's Broker of the Year in 2025. House of Finance doesn't publish firm-level volume, so the scale score is conservative.

He told MPA the firm measures success by trust rather than volume, which is easy to say and harder to mean when you're writing at the top of the national rankings.

Why some big names from the rankings aren't here

If you've read MPA's Top Brokerages 2026, you'll notice gaps. Four of its top ten are commercial-first firms: Simplicity Loans & Advisory (first), Green Finance Group (equal fifth) and Rethink Financing (eighth), plus Stamford Capital, eighth in The Adviser's Top 25. Their leaders are on the commercial leaders list, because each person appears on one list only and that's where their work is. Simplicity would be out of this one anyway: REA Group, which owns Mortgage Choice, bought 70% of it in February 2026.

Infinity Group on the Gold Coast came second in MPA's ranking and ninth in The Adviser's, with four brokers on MPA's Top 100. We couldn't confirm who holds the CEO role today, so it isn't ranked. Madd Loans in Brisbane, equal ninth with Tiffen & Co, isn't ranked either. Too little is published about the business to score it fairly. Either could join the list when that changes.

Worth watching

Katie Thomas runs Focus Finance in Newcastle, where five writers settled $896 million in 2025, and she personally topped The Adviser's Elite Broker residential ranking for FY25. She's on the top mortgage brokers list rather than this one, and she'd have a case for both.

Mortgage Pros in Sydney had four brokers settle $895 million in FY25, which The Adviser singled out as one of the highest efficiency figures in the table. Strategic Brokers, founded by Hung Chuy around 2020, reached 11th in MPA's Top Brokerages 2026. The newer firms climbing fastest, such as MedX Finance, are on the founders to watch list.

What this list tells a principal who's hiring

Look at the broker counts. Shore did $2.15 billion with 31 brokers and Mortgage Pros did $895 million with four, while the franchise networks needed more than a thousand brokers each to reach the top three. The independents that climb these rankings win on what each seat produces, which comes down to who's in it and what's around it.

The support hire matters as much as the broker. A broker writing $150 million a year needs a credit analyst and a processor who can keep up. If you're trying to grow the same way, the first operations hire is usually where it starts.

Joe Shephard's verdict: When the Top 25 came out in February, my comment on it was that I'd love to see a Top 25 made up purely of independents. This is the closest thing to it. Every name here built something people chose to join, without a franchise brand doing the recruiting for them.

How this list is scored

  • Scale. The size of what they run: settlements, loan book, brokers, offices, using the most recent published figures.
  • Results. What's been delivered under their watch: ranking positions, growth, acquisitions, national awards.
  • Tenure. Time in the seat. Building a brokerage through more than one cycle counts for more than a good year.

Three criteria, each out of ten, for a total out of 30. The scores are my editorial judgement against published evidence: The Adviser's Top 25 Brokerages 2026 (FY25 data), MPA's Top Brokerages 2026 (calendar 2025 data), MPA's Top 100 Brokers 2025, and the 2025 and 2026 Australian Broking Awards, Australian Mortgage Awards and MFAA Excellence Awards. Every source is listed at the foot of the page, and every person's current role was checked in October 2026 against their company's own pages, trade press or LinkedIn.

I recruit in this market rather than broke in it, so nobody from FinTalent appears on this list. Where someone on it is a FinTalent client, the card says so. Nobody paid to be here and there's no entry to buy. If you think someone's missing, I'd like to hear who and why.

Independent means the brokerage owns its brand. Franchise networks and their franchisees, aggregators and lenders are excluded. Where a firm's own figure is used, such as a loan book or a staff count, the card says where it came from.

Questions principals ask

Who is the biggest independent mortgage brokerage in Australia?

On The Adviser's Top 25 Brokerages 2026, Shore Financial, led by co-founder and CEO Theo Chambers, was the highest-ranked independent at fourth overall, behind only the Aussie, Mortgage Choice and Loan Market networks. Its 31 brokers settled $2.15 billion in FY25. MPA's separate 2026 ranking, which uses calendar 2025 figures and weighs conversion as well as volume, was topped by Simplicity Loans & Advisory, now 70% owned by REA Group. Among the brokerages on this list, The Australian Lending & Investment Centre and AUSUN Finance placed highest, third and fourth.

What counts as an independent brokerage?

For this list, a brokerage that owns its own brand. Franchise networks such as Aussie, Mortgage Choice and Loan Market, and their franchise offices, are excluded, as are aggregators and lenders. Some independents use an aggregator's bring-your-own-brand program, which keeps the brand theirs, and the card says so where it applies.

Which brokerage won Major Independent Brokerage of the Year in 2026?

Inovayt, the Melbourne brokerage Nick Reilly co-founded in 2007, won Major Independent Brokerage of the Year at the 2026 Australian Broking Awards. Shore Financial, Azura Financial and MedX Finance were among the finalists.

How do independent brokerages compete with the franchise networks?

On output per broker rather than headcount. Shore settled $2.15 billion with 31 brokers and Mortgage Pros $895 million with four in FY25, against networks that needed more than a thousand brokers each to top the table. FinTalent's view is that the independents that climb build their credit and support layer early, so each broker's time goes on writing loans.
