The top 10 mortgage brokers in Australia in 2026

Two rankings count settlements: MPA's Top 100 Brokers and The Adviser's Elite Broker ranking. They don't agree, partly because not everyone enters both, and neither one tells you who has done it for a decade or been recognised by their peers. This list puts the two together with the national awards and the years behind each broker, scored on three published criteria, so you can argue with the order.

The top mortgage brokers in Australia in 2026 include Katie Thomas (Focus Finance), Mark Davis (The Australian Lending & Investment Centre), Stephen Michaels (Catalyst Advisers), Tom Hawley (Azura Financial) and Chris Bates (Alcove), scored on FY25 volume across MPA's Top 100 Brokers 2025 and The Adviser's Elite Broker 2025, national awards, and years in the industry.

The ten

Volume uses each broker's best position on either ranking for FY25, because a broker who didn't enter one list shouldn't be marked down for it. Recognition counts national awards (the Australian Broking Awards, the Australian Mortgage Awards and the MFAA Excellence Awards) and repeat appearances at the top. Aggregator and lender awards aren't counted.

1. Katie Thomas

FY25 rankings:
#1 Elite Broker ($496.5m, 280 loans); #3 MPA Top 100
Awards:
Australian Broker of the Year 2025; MFAA national residential 2026
Broking since:
2019
  • Volume 10/10
  • Recognition 10/10
  • Longevity 5/10

Total25/30

The first woman to top The Adviser's Elite Broker ranking, with $496.5 million across 280 loans in FY25, and third on MPA's Top 100. She was named Australian Broker of the Year and Regional Broker of the Year at the 2025 Australian Mortgage Awards, then won the MFAA's national residential broker award in 2026.

She does it from Newcastle, with an average loan of about $1.77 million, and her five-writer brokerage settled $896 million in 2025. Seven years in, longevity is the only score keeping her from a perfect total, and that one fixes itself.

2. Mark Davis

FY25 rankings:
#6 Elite Broker ($315.2m, 598 loans); #10 MPA Top 100
Awards:
Broker of the Year 2014; Australian Broker of the Year 2016; MFAA national residential 2023
Broking:
About 17 years; co-founded ALIC in 2009
  • Volume 7/10
  • Recognition 10/10
  • Longevity 8/10

Total25/30

One of the longest records at the top of Australian broking. Davis was overall Broker of the Year at the 2014 Australian Broking Awards, Australian Broker of the Year at the 2016 Australian Mortgage Awards, topped MPA's Top 100 in 2016 and 2020, and won the MFAA's national residential award in 2023 and the productivity category at the 2024 Australian Mortgage Awards.

He's still writing near the top: sixth in The Adviser's Elite Broker ranking for FY25 with $315.2 million across 598 loans, and tenth on MPA's Top 100. He co-founded ALIC in 2009, which is on the independent brokerage leaders list.

3. Stephen Michaels

FY25 rankings:
#1 MPA Top 100 ($558m); not listed in Elite Broker
Awards:
#1 MPA Top 100 in 2024 and 2025
At Catalyst:
Since 2012, its first employee
  • Volume 10/10
  • Recognition 7/10
  • Longevity 7/10

Total24/30

The biggest verified individual number in Australian broking. Michaels topped MPA's Top 100 Brokers for the second year running with $558 million settled in FY25, up from $381 million the year before, and was third in 2023. He doesn't appear in The Adviser's Elite Broker ranking, most likely because he didn't enter it, which is why this list uses each broker's best ranking rather than an average.

He joined Catalyst as its first employee in 2012, in a credit role, and now runs its residential and SME lending for high-net-worth and expat clients. His line to MPA: "Discipline beats motivation every day of the week."

4. Tom Hawley

FY25 rankings:
#4 Elite Broker ($356.3m, 398 loans); #8 MPA Top 100
Awards:
Broker of the Year 2025; Residential Broker of the Year 2024 and 2025
Broking:
About 12 years; co-founded Azura in 2016
  • Volume 8/10
  • Recognition 10/10
  • Longevity 6/10

Total24/30

Named Broker of the Year at the 2025 Australian Broking Awards, and Residential Broker of the Year in both 2024 and 2025. Hawley was fourth in The Adviser's Elite Broker ranking for FY25 with $356.3 million across 398 loans, eighth on MPA's Top 100, and fifth on MPA's list the year before.

He writes inside a brokerage he co-founded with his brother Ben, which also tops the independent brokerage leaders list for awards. Consistency is the story: inside the top ten on both rankings, and winning the industry's main individual award while doing it.

5. Chris Bates

FY25 rankings:
#3 Elite Broker ($392.9m, 392 loans); #6 MPA Top 100
Awards:
Broker of the Year 2023; #1 Elite Broker 2024
Broking:
About 12 years
  • Volume 9/10
  • Recognition 8/10
  • Longevity 6/10

Total23/30

Bates topped the first Elite Broker ranking in 2024 and was overall Broker of the Year at the 2023 Australian Broking Awards. In FY25 he was third in The Adviser's ranking with $392.9 million across 392 loans and sixth on MPA's Top 100, after third and sixth on MPA's list in the two years before.

His model is strategy-led advice for higher-income families, often referred by financial planners. The brokerage has changed names more than once, from Blusk to Alcove, and the volume has followed him the whole way.

6. Deslie Taylor

FY25 rankings:
#8 Elite Broker ($307.0m, 608 loans); #11 MPA Top 100
Awards:
Residential Broker of the Year 2026
Broking:
About 19 years, same franchise since 2007
  • Volume 6/10
  • Recognition 8/10
  • Longevity 9/10

Total23/30

Named Residential Broker of the Year at the 2026 Australian Broking Awards, almost two decades into running the same Mortgage Choice franchise in the growth corridor between Brisbane and the Gold Coast. She wrote 608 loans worth $307.0 million in FY25, eighth in The Adviser's ranking and 11th on MPA's Top 100, after eighth on MPA's list the year before.

The Adviser has named her the highest-ranked female residential broker in its ranking in both 2024 and 2025, and she was Mortgage Broker of the Year at the 2024 Women in Finance Awards. It's owner-occupier and first home buyer volume, which makes the loan count more impressive than the dollar figure.

7. Michael Xia

FY25 rankings:
#2 Elite Broker ($490.2m, 1,001 loans); #4 MPA Top 100
Why here:
Most loans written by any broker in the ranking
Broking:
About 11 years
  • Volume 10/10
  • Recognition 4/10
  • Longevity 6/10

Total20/30

One thousand and one loans in a single financial year. Xia was second in The Adviser's Elite Broker ranking for FY25 with $490.2 million, and nobody in the top 100 wrote more loans. He climbed MPA's Top 100 from 74th in 2023 to 24th in 2024 and fourth in 2025.

He works with property investors building large portfolios, where borrowing capacity and structure are the job. He hasn't yet won a national award, which is the only thing holding the total down, and on that trajectory it probably won't stay that way.

8. Chris Raymond

FY25 rankings:
#7 Elite Broker ($310.7m, 633 loans); #9 MPA Top 100
Awards:
Residential Broker of the Year, 2025 Australian Mortgage Awards
Broking:
About 11 years
  • Volume 7/10
  • Recognition 7/10
  • Longevity 6/10

Total20/30

A former broker BDM at a major bank who crossed to the other side of the channel and now writes property investment, trust, SMSF and complex-income lending. Raymond won Residential Broker of the Year at the 2025 Australian Mortgage Awards, and wrote 633 loans worth $310.7 million in FY25.

He's moved up MPA's Top 100 three years running, from 24th to 13th to ninth. Unconditional Finance also appears in MPA's Top Brokerages 2026.

9. Balpreet Singh Bal

FY25 rankings:
#14 Elite Broker ($226.4m, 405 loans); #29 MPA Top 100
Awards:
MFAA national residential broker award, 2025
Broking:
About 12 years
  • Volume 5/10
  • Recognition 7/10
  • Longevity 6/10

Total18/30

The MFAA's national residential broker in 2025, and the top Western Australian broker on this list. Bal wrote 405 loans worth $226.4 million in FY25 for 14th in The Adviser's ranking, and has been on MPA's Top 100 three years running.

His work is first home buyers, investors, refinancers and small-business borrowers, which is the bread and butter of Australian broking done at a volume most brokerages never reach.

10. Kin Wong

FY25 rankings:
#16 MPA Top 100 (#7 in 2024)
Why here:
Top 20 on MPA's list three years running
Broking:
About 24 years
  • Volume 5/10
  • Recognition 3/10
  • Longevity 10/10

Total18/30

Twenty-four years in, and still on MPA's Top 100 every year: 16th in 2023, seventh in 2024 and 16th again in 2025. Wong built One Solutions around a model that puts lending, financial planning, accounting and property advice under one roof.

There's no big national award on the record, so recognition is low. Longevity at this volume is rare enough that it earns the last place on its own.

Worth watching

Laith Hana of House of Finance went from outside MPA's Top 100 to second on it in 2025, and he's on the independent brokerage leaders list. Stephanie Thomas of Loan Market Ignite in Brisbane reached 19th on MPA's Top 100 in 2025 and was named a finalist in three categories at the 2026 Australian Mortgage Awards. Peter Ha of Mortgage Pros was fourth on MPA's list in 2024 and ninth in The Adviser's FY25 ranking. Michael Killiner of Tusk Finance in Perth made 47th on MPA's Top 100 and 24th in The Adviser's ranking in his business's first full year, and he's on the founders to watch list. Commercial specialists such as Son Pham, fifth in The Adviser's FY25 residential ranking as well, are on the commercial leaders list.

Several people on this page were named finalists at the 2026 Australian Mortgage Awards. Only awards already won are scored, so those results come in at the next update.

What this list tells a principal who's hiring

Almost nobody on this list is available, and that's the useful part. The brokers at the top of these rankings built their own businesses or have equity in one, and the ones who don't are tied to trail they won't walk away from. Principals who want a broker like this usually end up hiring the person who'll be on the list in five years.

Look at the backgrounds and you see what that person looks like: a bank credit role, a BDM seat, a broker support job, or seven years writing in one regional market. Several were hired for attitude and given room, which is the argument in our piece on hiring for attitude.

Joe Shephard's verdict: The broker at the top of these rankings is already somebody's principal, or about to be. The ones you can actually hire are the credit analyst who wants to write, the banker who's sick of saying no, and the broker in a big network who's ready for a smaller one.

How this list is scored

  • Volume. FY25 settlements, as ranked by MPA's Top 100 Brokers 2025 and The Adviser's Elite Broker 2025.
  • Recognition. National awards and repeat appearances at the top of the rankings, not a single big year.
  • Longevity. Years writing loans or running the business they write from.

Three criteria, each out of ten, for a total out of 30. The scores are my editorial judgement against published evidence: MPA's Top 100 Brokers 2025 and The Adviser's Elite Broker ranking 2025, both on FY25 residential settlements, earlier editions of both for consistency, and the national winners lists of the Australian Broking Awards, the Australian Mortgage Awards and the MFAA Excellence Awards. Every source is listed at the foot of the page, and every person's current role was checked in October 2026 against their company's own pages, trade press or LinkedIn.

I recruit in this market rather than broke in it, so nobody from FinTalent appears on this list. Where someone on it is a FinTalent client, the card says so. Nobody paid to be here and there's no entry to buy. If you think someone's missing, I'd like to hear who and why.

MPA's Top 100 Brokers 2026 is due to be published in December 2026, and the list will be re-scored when it is. Brokers inside franchise networks are included here, because this list ranks the broker rather than the business.

Questions principals ask

Who is the best mortgage broker in Australia?

On FY25 settlements, Stephen Michaels of Catalyst Advisers topped MPA's Top 100 Brokers for the second year running with $558 million, and Katie Thomas of Focus Finance topped The Adviser's Elite Broker ranking with $496.5 million. Combining volume with national awards and longevity, this list ranks Katie Thomas first, ahead of Mark Davis, Stephen Michaels, Tom Hawley and Chris Bates.

How much does a top mortgage broker settle in a year?

It took $143 million in FY25 settlements to make MPA's Top 100 Brokers 2025, and the top 100 averaged 294 loans each. At the very top, three brokers settled close to or above half a billion dollars: Stephen Michaels ($558 million), Katie Thomas ($496.5 million) and Michael Xia ($490.2 million, across 1,001 loans).

When is MPA's Top 100 Brokers 2026 published?

MPA says the Top 100 Brokers 2026 report will be published online and in MPA magazine in December 2026, based on loans settled in FY26. This page uses the 2025 edition, which is the current one, and will be re-scored when the new list is out.

Can I recruit a top 100 broker?

Rarely, and not quickly. Most own their brokerage or have equity in one, and the rest are tied to trail they won't give up. FinTalent's experience is that principals do better hiring the broker who'll be on the list in five years, often a credit analyst or banker ready to write, and building the support around them. Its guide to recruiting experienced brokers explains what it takes to move the rest.
